BMI is a useful measure of overweight and obesity. It is calculated using your height and weight. BMI is usually the estimate of your body fat and a good gauge of your risk for diseases that occur with more body fat. It is known that the higher your BMI, the higher your risk for heart diseases, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, gallstones, apnea and other breathing problems, and certain cancers. It is estimated that over 7 million deaths worldwide are as a result of heart disease. Nearly 10 million deaths were due to cancer. In a few years, it is estimated that cancer will claim 11 million lives every year going forward. It gets worse. It is estimated that by the year 2031—a little over a decade from now—over 336 million people worldwide will be diabetic. Presently, over sixty-six percent of Americans over the age of 20 are debilitatingly obese. Are you obese? Are you overweight? What is your BMI?
