  • Book cover of Italian Renaissance Humanism in the Mirror
    Patrick Baker

     · 2015

This important study takes a new approach to understanding Italian Renaissance humanism, based not on scholarly paradigms or philosophical concepts but on a neglected yet indispensable perspective: the humanists' understanding of themselves. Through a series of close textual studies, Patrick Baker excavates what humanists thought was important about humanism, how they viewed their own history, what goals they enunciated, what triumphs they celebrated - in short, he attempts to reconstruct humanist identity. What emerges is a small, coherent community dedicated primarily not to political ideology, a philosophy of man, an educational ethos, or moral improvement, but rather to the pursuit of classical Latin eloquence. Grasping the significance this stylistic ideal had for the humanists is essential to understanding both their sense of themselves and the importance they and others attached to their movement. For eloquence was no mere aesthetic affair but rather appeared to them as the guarantor of civilisation itself.

  • Book cover of The Essence of Twelve - The Beginning of the journey

Earth is on the brink of total annihilation and the only hope for survival are thirteen young individuals (one controller and twelve Essence protectors). They are linked through one core commonality- Selina, the Denarian supreme commander, who having fled from her evil husband Alanius twenty-three years earlier, seeks refuge on earth, the remotest of planets in the vast expanses of the known galaxy. Here she marries a human, a game ranger named Gus and gives birth to Jason, her firstborn son, of alien and human descent. She also infuses another twelve infants with Essence, an alien, cosmic substance bestowing custodian powers on each unknowing infant, to be the protectors of earth only if and when the earth is ever confronted with invasion by Alanius and his fleet of voracious soldiers. Jason inadvertently triggers the discovery of the locality of each individual and sets in motion a race against time in locating, activating and preparing the Essence of Twelve for their ultimate challenge, saving Earth.

Koa (Acacia koa) is a tree species endemic to Hawaii that is of immense ecological and economic importance. This species has been mined from local forests for its wood for more than 100 years, and extensive areas of koa-dominated forests have been converted to grazing lands. Today, in recognition of the great importance and value of koa and the forests in which it is found, there is substantial interest in restoration and management of koa forests. This report brings together knowledge on the biogeography, physiology, ecology, and silviculture of koa in an effort to assist landowners and resource stewards in making sound decisions about restoring and managing koa forests.

    Patrick Baker

     · 2014

A travelogue exploring the colorful history of the Scottish mountain range, by the author of The Unremembered Places. Cairngorms: A Secret History is a series of journeys exploring barely known human and natural stories of the Cairngorm Mountains. It looks at a unique British landscape, its last great wilderness, with new eyes. History combines with travelogue in a vivid account of this elemental scenery. There have been rare human incursions into the Cairngorm plateau, and Patrick Baker tracks them down. He traces elusive wildlife and relives ghostly sightings on the summit of Ben Macdui. From the search for a long-forgotten climbing shelter and the locating of ancient gem mines, to the discovery of skeletal aircraft remains and the hunt for a mysterious nineteenth-century aristocratic settlement, he seeks out the unlikeliest and most interesting of features in places far off the beaten track. The cultural and human impact of this stunning landscape and reflections on the history of mountaineering are the threads which bind this compelling narrative together.
