A method for laboratory evaluation of manifolding papers is presented. An impact imaging device and an electro-optical image evaluator are described. With these instruments, field performance of commercial manifolding products can be predicted. In addition, test methods have been developed which characterize energy transfer, image transfer, and image receptivity, three primary product properties that affect manifolding. The use of the instruments and methods as an aid in the development of high manifolding products is illustrated.
