The Puntney family is said to have originated in France. Members of the family were forced to flee France because the were Huguenots. They eventually settled in England. A couple of generations later, Joseph Puntenney (1727-1780) immigrated to America and settled in Maryland. He married Sarah Hollingsworth and they became the parents of nine children. Their children moved west into Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and Illinois. Descendants live throughout the United States.
