These volumes are typewritten copies of letters he sent home while traveling with his wife in Europe, Egypt, and the Middle East. Each volume contains the letters from one trip and several volumes have interleaved loose items (tickets, programs, postcards, mementos, etc.). The sixth journal "Europe in 1899 (Bicycle Trip)" includes many photographs taken and developed by Garver. His letters, which are graphic in their descriptions of scenery, art, and architecture, also reflect his political interests, conversations with acquaintances, and impressions of foreign cultures.
