Discussion of discovery and colonization of Mauritius, the Muslim festival of Yamseh and the Hindu festival in honor of the female deity Doorga, geographical description of "Les Trois Mamelles", waterfalls, the Grand Bassin, and the coastal formations of the Souffleur and the "Pont Naturel" or natural bridge; and the shipwreck of the St. Geran in 1744, which was the inspiration for Bernardin de St. Pierre's Paul and Virginia (Paul et Virginie), based on an engaged couple, Mlle. Mallet and M. De Péramon, who perished: "Their bodies were picked up the following day, clasped in the close embrace in which they awaited death."
