The paper describes a Small Business Information Resources Management course in a Small Business Management program at the School of Business and Economics, University of Maribor, Slovenia. The aim of the course is to provide students with knowledge and experience to deal with information technology and systems in small business from a managerial perspective. The theoretical part of the course is conducted in a classroom and the practical part is experienced in mentor firms. Thus students have an opportunity to compare, combine and verify "theory" and "practice" instantly and develop cabability to transfer the acquired knowledge and skills into practice.

In the paper some practical aspects and experiences of information resource management of small firms in Slovenia are introduced. They serve as a basis for defining hypothesis for the research done in 1997 on information resources management in small Slovene firms, which are as well presented and discussed in the paper. The target group firms are presented together with the research sample. Then, results about key managerial issues, such as motivating factors for introducing information technology, investments, responsible persons for purchasing information resources, outsourcing of information are introduced and discussed. Finally, the conclusions based on research hypothesis are presented.
