Hans Holbein Le Jeune (1497/98-1543) a été un peintre, dessinateur et graveur qui s'est exprimé dans différents genres utilisant différentes techniques. Au cours de sa carrière, il s'est peu à peu spécialisé dans le portrait, art auquel il a porté une passion exclusive avec lequel il a connu une grande renommée de son vivant. Nombreux de ses portraits dessinés ou peints témoignent d'une virtuosité technique indéniable et d'un rare sens du rendu psychologique de ses modèles. Holbein a entre autres portraituré de célèbres contemporains de son époque comme Erasme et Thomas More. Aux alentours de 1536, il a été nommé peintre de la cour anglaise du roi Henri VIII.
