Medieval German-language legends of St. George unify lay and religious moral values in their concepts of knightly sanctity. This study reveals how courtly and legendary traditions of representation were brought together not only at the level of the narrative subject but also at the level of the narrative itself. These individual literary analyses thus adopt narratological and cultural-anthropological perspectives and investigate the extent to which the functional embedding of the textsisalso achieved through the literary techniques.
