Bold as Brass is a collection of twenty-four stories set in Waterbury, Connecticut, once Brass Capital of the World. All the stories are works of fiction. They are the author's look into long-ago lives, both of her Irish Catholic family and of imagined characters who might have joined them in their daily goings on, in a period of time that stretches from the thirties through the fifties. Whether the characters are swimming at Scovill's Dam on a hot summer day and wondering what is beneath that water or telling stories around the kitchen table on a rainy afternoon, making a pilgrimage to Saint Anne de Beaupre in Canada to request a baby or bearing gifts to a birthday celebration with mixed results, their stories are presented in a way that shows how insightful commonplace occurrences can prove to be. Bold as Brass is the authors second book, deliciously anecdotal, and a true companion to her first book, The View from Cracker Hill, a memoir of 1950s Waterbury. These are stories of working-class people, of whom Betty notes in "Saturday Night Swells," the idea that "ordinary people can have extraordinary moments is a wonderful discovery." The author says, "I echo Betty's sentiment, and I am delighted to share these stories."

  • Book cover of Teacher Unions, Social Movements and the Politics of Education in Asia

This title was first published in 2003:In the globalizing world, South Korea is widely regarded as a model example of how a school education system can enhance national economic development. Similar claims are made for other Asian NICs such as Taiwan. However, less understood is how the education system in South Korea became a site of intense conflict as, in the decade from 1989-99, a large movement of teachers battled with the government over development-related issues such as democratic reforms and human rights in schooling, in a struggle that divided this education-oriented society and at times plunged the nation’s schools into chaos. This book analyses the emergence of the National Teachers’ Union of Korea, Chunkyojo, and traces its struggle for educational reforms. The book examines the South Korean education system within national and global contexts and the historical experiences that have shaped the modern nation - such as its Confucianist history, its experiences of colonialism and the legacy of the Cold War conflict with North Korea. As South Korea searches for pathways for reunification, economic growth and the consolidation of democratic civil society, important new perspectives on the role of education emerge through this analysis of the teachers’ social movement. This book also presents separate chapters on teacher movements in Taiwan and the Philippines, that provide interesting comparisons to the South Korean case, while revealing the distinctive political and historical experiences that have shaped education in these societies and the emergence of reformist teacher movements. In a valuable appendix, the author discusses methodological and theoretical aspects of the research in this book.

Kniha popisuje ucelený příběh vůbec nejslavnějšího free solo výstupu v dějinách skalního lezení – roku 2017 Alex Honnold, aniž by se přitom jakýmkoliv způsobem jistil, pokořil strmou yosemitskou stěnu El Capitan měřící téměř kilometr, ačkoliv byla až do roku 1958 považována za nezdolatelnou i tradičním způsobem na laně.

While medical records have been digitized and technology has benefited physicians and hospitals in the last decade, the general population continues to struggle with finding and maintaining their own medical records. This project is intended to be the foundation of a cloud-based system that collects and maintains a person's medical records, provides them access from any device, and enables them to share information with medical professionals. The following presents the design and development of the myHealth system, its architecture, database design and Graphical User Interface prototype. Once connected to the individuals' health services web sites, myHealth can import data and documents to a secure host and be accessible at any future time. Filters can be used to easily find data and records from a specific time frame, physician, lab test or condition. The system is implemented using SQL, Bootstrap, PHP, JavaScript and HTML. In summary, this project met my criteria for success by completing a cloud based website from conception to completion. It is also a starting point for future work in my desired career field, namely the development of a streamlined and personalized global medical record system.
