Tests have shown that water hyacinth plants can be used for growing not only Volvariella mushrooms but also Pleurotus and Auricularia. The mushwooms grow faster and yield more if grown on this substrate than on rice straw. It can also be used as substrate for preparation of the spawn either alone or in combination with other substrates such as rice straw and sawdust. All the parts of the plant including roots can be used in making beds for Volvariella mushrooms or in the preparation of mush bags for Pleurotus and Auricularia. [Author's abstract].
