Time-Life Books wonderful pictorial recounting the history of of the Western frontier, its people, industries and alluring stories of courage. The Trailblazers is one of twenty-seven volumes in the popular Time-Life book series "The Old West". This book gives an account of the bold explorers who blazed trails through the Rocky Mountains and subsequently opened the American West to the pioneers, Mormons, and forty-niners. Alexander Mackenzie, Meriwether Lewis, William Clark, Joseph Walker, John Fremont, John Wesley Powell, and several famous mountain men are among the notable figures of this volume. Artists such as Karl Bodmer, Thomas Nuttall, and George Catlin caught and preserved the wonders of the wilderness with their paintings. It includes a map showing the various locations for each rendezvous held during the 1820s and 1830s. With its interesting narrative and numerous contemporary paintings and photographs, The Trailblazers does a good job of portraying the American West before the advent of the railroads, freeways, and metropolitan America.
