Testing techniques for evaluating experimental gas turbine lubricants in face-riding main shaft jet engine seals at temperatures representative of high mach aircraft have been under development. Using the RTD-1 procedure, a total of six runs were made using five lubricants. These lubricants were rated in regard to test rig life determined by seal-lubricant interaction. Additional information on deposit forming characteristics, viscosity and acid number change, seal wear, and oil consumption is reported for each lubricant evaluated. A portable instrument console and a portable test oil cart were constructed as a part of this contract. These replaced existing items and were constructed to conform with current practice at WPAFB.

Testing techniques for evaluating experimental gas turbine lubricants in face-riding main shaft jet engine seals at temperatures representative of high mach aircraft have been under development. Lubricant evaluations at 350 F bulk temperature, using the RTD seal head, are continuing. During this reporting period, lubricant 0-65-21 was evaluated. (Author).

Testing techniques for evaluating experimental gas turbine lubricants in face-riding main shaft jet engine seals at temperatures representative of high mach aircraft have been under development. Using a newly designed RTD Seal Head a repeatable evaluation procedure has been developed for evaluating lubricants at the 350 F bulk lubricant temperature level. A total of thirteen lubricants has been evaluated and relatively rated in regard to test rig life determined by seal-lubricant interaction. Additional information on deposit forming characteristics, viscosity and acid number change, seal wear, and oil consumption is reported for each lubricant evaluated. (Author).
