In 1996, an effort-based management system was introduce in the Faroe Islands, in order to regulate the demersal gadoid fishery. This system represents a unique and innovative fisheries management case study. This work aims at evaluating its efficiency by comparing it with a TAC management system as it exists in Europe. A Management Strategy Evaluation model (MSE) was built using FLR framework. A MSE is based on an Operating Model (OM) which simulates the stock and a Management Procedure (MP) using Harvest Control Rules (HCR). Different management scenarios were tested (effort or TAC, with or without bound) under different conditions (initial biomass above or below Bpa) with stochastic simulations compare uncertainty in those two systems. In results, an effort system seems to be more biologically sustainable than a TAC one, while producing less variability. However, the underlying assumption of a constant catchability (link between effort and fishing mortality) appears to not be verified in the Faroese
