  • Book cover of Chip Of the Flying U
    B. M. Bower

     · 2022

Set in Montana, ‘Chip of the Flying U’ introduces us to the eponymous cowboy and the Happy family. Chip is awkward around women, but when he meets the gun-toting Dr Della Whitmore, things are about to take a different turn. A beautifully-detailed look at life in the Old West, this story has romance at its heart but doesn’t skimp on presenting things as they were, warts and all. ́Chip of the Flying U’ is a superb read for fans of Oliver Wister's ́The Virginian ́ and for those looking for an introduction to Bower’s work. Born Bertha Muzzy Sinclair Bower, BM Bower (1871 – 1940) was originally from Minnesota. However, when she was 18, her family moved to Montana, where she gained first-hand experience of the ranch life that was to so influence her books. A year later, she eloped with her first husband to Big Sandy. Finding herself in an unhappy marriage, she sought escapism through writing. Her first novel, ‘Chip of the Flying U’ gave Bower the financial independence to leave her husband. After relocating to Tacoma, Bower continued to write for ‘Popular Magazine’ before remarrying, this time to Bill Sinclair, who also had literary aspirations. This union, too, was short-lived and Bower moved to Hollywood, where she met her third and final husband, Bud Cowan. Over her career, Bower wrote more than 50 novels, all focussing on the western way of life. Unusually for the time, she paid as much attention to her female characters, as the male leads. She died in Los Angeles, aged 68.

  • Book cover of Human Associative Memory

Published in 1980, part of the Experimental Psychology series. This book proposes and tests a theory about human memory, about how a person encodes, retains, and retrieves information from memory. This edition contains two major parts. First is the historical analysis of associationism and its countertraditions. This still provides the framework that has been used to relate the current research to an important intellectual tradition. This is reproduced without comment from the original book; historical analyses do not need as rapid revision as theoretical analyses. The second part of the book reproduces the major components of the HAM theory.

Chip, of the Flying U by B. M. Bower B. M. (Bertha Muzzy) Bower was the first woman to make a career out of writing popular westerns. And what a career she was: more than sixty novels published from 1904 to 1940, the year of her death, and even more posthumous. In western orbit, Bower was - and still is - a star. Her first, Chip of the Flying U, sets up a ranch in Montana and features the Happy Family, the dorm gang that reappears in her later books. Chip is the typical shy cowboy of women, but he is also a gifted artist (Bower is said to have based the character on Charles M. Russell, who illustrated Chip). Della, a doctor, is the young woman who upsets her lonely life. The result as a quality ranch love story. Chip of the Flying U was a huge success leading to several film releases, one of which chose Hoot Gibson as the Chip. Today's readers, who grew up watching Westerns on television, will appreciate Bower's cinematic style. After living much of her life in Chouteau County, Montana, she moved to Los Angeles, close to the film industry that has increasingly fascinated her.
