Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2.0, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, course: Shakespeare's History Plays, language: English, abstract: This paper’s aim is to analyse and compare the kings Edward II and Richard II as depicted in Marlowe’s and Shakespeare’s plays with special attention to their relationships to their favourites. It cannot, however, take the historical figures of Edward II and Richard II into consideration as this would exceed the paper’s focus. There are many parallels between the two plays. Each is about a king who is deposed and murdered, and in each the barons accuse the king’s favourites of having manipulated the sovereign to serve their own political advantage. In both plays, the issue of homosexuality comes up: Edward has a homosexual relationship with his favourite Gaveston, Henry Bolingbroke accuses Bushy and Green of having seduced Richard politically as well as sexually and of thus having misled him as a ruler and destroyed the king’s marriage. The question comes up if both kings’ relationships to their peers really are – as we understand it today – of a homosexual nature. If so: were the favourites accused of having a negative influence on the kings because of their homosexuality? Is homosexuality in itself a charge heavy enough to depose a king? To answer this, chapter two will explain the Elizabethan view on homosexuality, which differs significantly from our own contemporary understanding. Even though the historical settings of both plays are in the Middle Ages, they will be examined from an early modern point of view since they were both written by Elizabethan playwrights for a contemporaneous audience. Subsequent chapters will examine and compare homosexuality within both plays and analyse which role it plays in connection with questions of power and the barons’ revolts.

Amanda understands her dad is making the world a better place, but it doesn't make his year-long deployment any easier. By writing her thoughts and prayers on yellow ribbons and tying them to the branches of a wishing tree, Amanda is able to express her feelings and feel connected to her dad. As she wishes for her dad to enjoy good meals, make new friends, and return home safely, her little wishing tree comes to life with yellow ribbons of hope. This heartwarming story beautifully illustrates the range of feelings a child experiences when a parent is deployed, the power of hope and prayer, and the joy of a parent returning home. Wishing trees exist in many cultures as a way to bring people's innermost thoughts and prayers to life. Amanda uses her wishing tree to express her feelings while her dad is deployed. Children can also create wishing trees to stay connected to parents traveling for work, grandparents who live far away, and even special friends between visits. The literature suggests that many Chican@s are not likely to seek mental health services due to stigma. The purpose of this study is to explore factors that may arise when an individual is seeking mental health services. This qualitative research surveyed six anonymous individuals, who identified as Chican@, through an online survey. Participants answered seven open-ended questions about the following categories: challenges faced prior to receiving mental health services, the immediate feeling when seeking mental health services, the way mental health services were introduced, the attitude/education behind discussing mental health within family, the topic of mental health in medical care, the feeling after seeking mental health services, and the perspective of mental health after having sought services. Chican@s in the study reported facing challenges prior to seeking mental health services due to familial issues and lack of finding resources. Additionally, participants shared there was a lack of education when discussing mental health amongst their families. Mental health services were looked upon by the participants families as “negative”. The study found that one out six participants were introduced to mental health services through a family member, which might suggest that families are lacking education about discussing mental health amongst their family. Last of all, four out of six participants shared how their primary Doctor never provided a mental health questionnaire, referral to seek services, nor discussed mental health services availability. If physicians are not discussing or screening for mental health illness they are preventing patients from getting the adequate services they may possibly need for their well being.
