Currently, one in three of the world's population suffer from one or more forms of malnutrition. The Agricultural Development and Nutrition teams at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, in collaboration with the UK's Department for International Development (FCDO), seek to investigate the potential of vegetable and fruit supply chains to increase the supply of and strengthen demand for nutritious foods, as well as increase local market opportunities for increased income, especially for women. This report highlights the conclusions from a study in Ethiopia, and identifies several root causes, as well as opportunities for interventions to further develop the fruit and vegetable sectors, and with that enhance consumption.

This report brings together work carried out over the last four years of the Platforms for Healthier Diets Project. This research has sought to understand (i) what categories of multi-stakeholder platforms working on food systems issues are present in the A4NH focal countries: Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Nigeria and Vietnam; (ii) where in the food system multi-stakeholder platforms (MSPs) are active; (iii) how the MSPs link to formal policy processes and; (iv) what potential role existing MSPs might play in supporting a shift to a more food system-based framing. Finally the report explores opportunities and challenge of using existing MSPs to support the anchoring and scaling of healthy diet narratives in the A4NH focal countries.
