Written in 1926, sixty years after the end of the Civil War, this memoir of the military service of Confederate Captain William F. Bahlmann describes the day to day life of the author and his comrades in arms from the War's early years to its end. Bahlmann enlisted in Fayetteville, Virginia and served as an infantry officer in the Virginia 22nd Regiment. He fought in the Battles of Scary Creek, Lewisburg, and Droop Mountain and in a number of unnamed skirmishes. During his five years of service, he was wounded, captured, imprisoned, and exchanged. Rather than focusing his account on battlefield experience or military strategy, Bahlmann writes most insightfully about the interactions he observed among the soldiers and civilians he encountered as a soldier.
