  • Book cover of Gregory Crewdson: In a Lonely Place

Although these series illustrate distinct subject matter, they share Crewdson's unique preoccupations and compelling aesthetic. "Fireflies" is the result of two solitary summer months spent photographing the fireflies that came alive at dusk each evening. "Beneath the Roses" depicts the homes, streets, and forests of unnamed small towns, revealing emotionally charged moments in the lives of seemingly ordinary individuals. In "Sanctuary," haunting images of the legendary Italian film studio Cinecitta capture the beauty of the decaying film sets. Texts from curators of the exhibition and Crewdson himself offer fresh insight and examine the parallels between these seemingly disparate subjects. Celebrating some of the artist's greatest work, this volume is a must-have for any Crewdson fan and the perfect introduction to those discovering him for the first time. Praise for Gregory Crewdson: In a Lonely Place "Whether one is exploring Crewdson's work for the first time, or revisiting his images, text from both the artist himself and the curators involved gives the reader a personal interaction with Crewdson that illustrates his passion for capturing the lives of others." --Huffington Post

Summary: While visiting Rome, world-renowned photographer Gregory Crewdson was invited to tour the legendary Italian film studio Cinecittà, where directors such as Federico Fellini and Roberto Rossellini shot their iconic works. He found the elaborate film sets had fallen into ruin and was captivated by their decaying beauty. He knew immediately that he had found his next project. While Crewdson's earlier series were enormously elaborate and required massive production crews, custom-built sound stages, and hired actors, he returned to Rome with only a small team and worked mostly with available lighting to create haunting black-and-white portraits of crumbling façades and deserted streets. However, all this does not really indicate a break with his earlier series, for the dramatic subtext so often found in his photographs, the uncanny feeling that they bring the past back to life, remains.

    Andrea Stern

     · 2007

Turning a lens on her kin, photographer Andrea Stern captures the visually rich and psychologically intriguing world of a wealthy Jewish family in New York. She chronicles momentous family gatherings--weddings, bar mitzvahs, funerals--as well as everyday events, such as visits to a grandmother in Palm Beach and weekend trips to Long Island. In the midst of bustling celebrations, she often focuses on individual family members, zeroing in on the tension that arises as individuals attempt to carve out separate identities in the midst of family entanglements. At first, the book's title alludes to the photographer's privileged upbringing, but the word 'inheritance' reverberates in other ways as one contemplates, in these alluring, candid portraits, the myriad traits and influences that are passed on from one family member and one generation to the next.
