Grace Quinn exploitait hier encore une ferme dans la campagne irlandaise, aux côtés de son mari. Mais Grace a tué son mari. Avec préméditation peut-être, mais non point froidement : rien n'est froid dans son histoire. Et elle s'en va à Dublin rejoindre Martin, son grand fils, qu'elle n'a pas su aimer comme il aurait fallu... Prisonnière d'un passé qui refuse de se laisser oublier, Grace ne cesse de se faire violence à elle-même : elle joue au chat et à la souris avec la police mais voudrait avouer son crime à tous ceux qu'elle rencontre.
