    MATT. GRAHAM

     · 2024

This book interrogates the discontinuous ripples of postmodernism within post-Cold War American literature and culture. The persistence of postmodern aesthetics within this period of succession underpins a reframing of what it means to come 'after' postmodernism, foregrounding an overlooked strand of American writing.

  • Book cover of Epic Survival

Matt Graham, star of the Discovery Channel's Dual Survival and Dude, You're Screwed, details the physical, mental, and emotional joys and harrowing struggles of his life as a modern-day hunter-gatherer. Early on in his life, Matt craved a return to nature. When he became an adult, he set aside his comfortable urban life and lived entirely off the land to learn from the smallest and grandest of all things. In this riveting narrative that brings together epic adventure and spiritual quest, he shows us what extraordinary things the human body is capable of when pushed to its limits. In Epic Survival, written with Josh Young, coauthor of five New York Times bestsellers, Matt relays captivating stories from his life to show just how terrifying--and gratifying--living off the grid can be. He learns the secrets of the Tarahumara Indians that helped him run the 1,600-mile Pacific Crest Trail in just fifty-eight days and endure temperature swings of 100 degrees. He takes us with him as he treks into the wilderness to live alone for half a year, armed with nothing but a loincloth, a pair of sandals, a stone knife, and chia seeds. He recounts near-death experiences of hiking alone through the snowdrifts at the bottom of the Grand Canyon, and tells us about the time he entered a three-day Arabian horse race on foot--and finished third. Above all, Epic Survival is a book about growing closer to the land that nurtures us. No matter how far our modern society takes us from the wilderness, the call remains. Whether you're an armchair survivalist or have taken the plunge yourself, Matt's story is both inspiration and invigoration, teaching even the most urbane among us important and breathtaking lessons.

     · 2016

Greetings. My name’s Matt Graham. I am, pound for pound, inch for inch (in all three dimensions), IQ point for IQ point, the biggest Loser I personally know. (Made it to the finals in the World Scrabble Championships...lost. Landed a writing gig with Saturday Night Live...only got one joke on the show before being canned, and the revolving door literally hit me on the ass on the way out. Joined OKCupid and received no responses after sending out more than 120 messages. You get thepicture.) So starts the story of a self-proclaimed chronic failure with uncanny expertise on life’s tendency to suck. This part tell-all, part confessional details all the ramblings, ravings, and score-settlings of a comedian who is too verbose for Twitter. Follow him from his childhood in the Midwest where we meet his mother, a woman with a penchant for spilling family secrets to the town drunk, and his father, a man so cheap he justifies swiping tips off tables, all the way to New York City where the ups and down of his life have given him permanent whiplash. Along the way, you’ll also get Matt’s insider scoop on what it was like to come up in the comedy scene in New York with people like Louis C.K., David Cross, and Marc Maron as well as a look into what it’s like to be a broke comic in the city (here’s a hint: sometimes you have to eat pancake batter for dinner). This Too Shall Suck--also a critically acclaimed New York International Fringe Festival show that ran for two solid years (OFF Broadway, naturally)--is Matt’s unflinchingly honest look at his own shortcomings that will have you rolling with laughter at times and moved to tears at others, and probably leave you feeling much better about your own life.

Very few studies have explored the relationship between the availability of certain types of firearms and gun density on both gun aggravated assaults and gun homicides. Nonetheless, research by Koper (2001) discovered that the availability of more lethal types of firearms, not gun density, was directly related to an increase in gun homicide rates for Dallas. However, this study did not take into account certain social and economic variables that may strengthen or weaken the determined relationship. The current study uses data previously analyzed by Koper (2001) and includes social and economic variables that have been linked to lethal violence while using gun aggravated assaults and gun homicides as the dependent variables. The results will help ascertain to what extent the impact of firearm availability on gun crimes is contingent on contextual factors.

It is a common misconception that nearly all unauthorized immigrants sneak across our southern border. However, Pew Research Center estimated that in 2006, 40 to 50 percent of unauthorized immigrants currently residing in the U.S. had entered the country legally but overstayed their visa. Today, the U.S. cannot effectively track or verify whether temporary visitors leave the country before expiration of their visas. The Government Accountability Office (GAO) noted in 2007 that without the ability to biometrically track international travelers exiting the country the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), "cannot ensure the integrity of the immigration system by identifying and removing those people who have overstayed their original period of admission." The legal mandate for biometric entry-exit visa tracking is over a decade old, and DHS implemented the entry portion largely in accordance with statutory deadlines. However, an array of logistical challenges has prevented the Department from implementing similar exit capability to track departing visitors.
