Alexander Ver Huell (1822-1897) gaf in zijn boek "Cornelis Troost en zijn werk" zijn eigen verzameling van tekeningen en prenten van Troost een prominente plek. Het boek was opgedragen aan 'Alle vrienden van waarheid in ideeën en vorm en alle bewonderaars van geest, vernuft en talent' en moest ervoor zorgen dat Troost geen onbekende zou zijn voor de generaties na hem. Ver Huell herkende iets in de manier waarop Troost de wereld om hem heen zo direct optekende. Dat bracht hem er misschien ook toe al jong een eigen verzameling van het werk van Troost op te bouwen.
