    Yiping Li

     · 2023

This book offers a comprehensive understanding of China’s tourism development from 1992 onwards, focusing on the social-cultural change that accompanied the rise of tourism. It examines both the economic benefits and sociocultural impacts of tourism and argues that tourism sustainability depends on a delicate balance between economic and social-cultural interests which could manifest differently among the stakeholders of various interests. It also explores, through both theoretical and empirical analysis, how travel connects people and places through the processes of tourist imagination and consumption. The volume portrays how contemporary discourses fuse with individual histories to formulate the ways in which tourists understand China. It will be a useful resource for students and scholars in human geography, tourism management, leisure and recreation, and social sciences.

  • Book cover of Addressing the Uneven Distribution of Water Quantity and Quality Endowment

This book presents a selected literature review and case studies for both physical and virtual water transfer. It offers an overview to showcase the interprovincial physical and virtual water transfer within China, and then demonstrates the effects of both approaches in dealing with regional water scarcity; the three cases presented in the Yangtze River Basin demonstrate the role of physical water transfer in improving water quality and restoring water ecosystems; while a Shanghai case highlights the impact of Shanghai’s virtual water import on water quantity and quality stress to other regions. This book promotes systematic approaches combining both virtual and physical water transfer solutions to deal with water quantity and quality issues. The book is intended for senior undergraduates, graduate students, lecturers and researchers in water management.

This research demonstrates a visual phenomenon with broad implications for pro-social behavior promotion. We find that the color saturation of marketing communication encouraging pro-social behavior can influence its effectiveness. We suggest that higher color saturation signals vigor and power, which in turn increases consumer self-efficacy and enhances pro-social behavior. Results from a field experiment and four online studies, employing images and texts with various colors and encouraging different pro-social behaviors, support these predictions. While prior research focused on the consumption of products, the current work enriches this literature, shifting the focus to encouraging pro-social behaviors. Further, previous explanations of color saturation suggested arousal as an underlying mechanism. By contrast, the current work takes a new approach, investigating the way color can signal meaning. From a practical standpoint, this research provides a low-cost, simple solution for non-profit organizations and policymakers looking to encourage pro-social behavior in a socially responsible manner.

This research report proposes a novel conceptual distinction between two motivations to post user-generated content - social motivation and informational motivation - and tests five linguistic features characterizing user-generated content that was posted driven predominantly by one of these two motivations. We employed an open-source text analysis tool to analyze real-world and experimentally obtained datasets and supported our theory by experimentally manipulating motivation and measuring linguistic outcomes. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.
