An exploratory study was conducted into the market potential of high-tech greenhouses in the Midwest and East Coast regions and the state of California in the United States (USA) and the investment opportunities for Dutch horticultural supply companies. Insight is given into the production, import and consumption of (fresh) fruit vegetable products in the US. It is estimated how large the high-tech greenhouse horticulture in the USA (in terms of acreage and investments) can theoretically have if the imports from Mexico and Canada are replaced by their own production. It is then indicated indicatively which investment opportunities this can provide to Dutch suppliers.

In this report we present an Impact Assessment on six objectives of the Farm to Fork and Biodiversity strategies with respect to reduction of pesticide use and risk, reduction of nutrient losses, increase of the area in the EU under organic production and increase of the amount of agricultural land under high-diversity landscape features. Four scenarios have been developed for which the impacts have been assessed: (1) reduction of use and risk of pesticides, (2) reduction of use and losses of nutrients, (3) increase of area under organic production and (4) a combination of the Scenarios 1 and 2 extended with the added objective to have more land with high-diversity landscape features. The impact assessment has been executed at farm level, covering ten crops and seven case countries across the EU. The results of the case studies have been used to explore the consequences of these objectives for the production volume of the crops in the EU, market prices, the international trade and indirect land use.

Wageningen Economic Research heeft in opdracht van Stichting Milieukeur (SMK) en gefinancierd door het Ministerie van Landbouw, Natuur en Voedselkwaliteit verschillende indelingssystemen onderzocht om SMK gecertificeerde bedrijven in de delen naar de omvang van de broeikasgasemissie. Er zijn vijf indelingen ontwikkeld, welke door SMK als basis kunnen worden gebruikt om bedrijven te stimuleren verder te verduurzamen op het terrein van energie. De keuze en uitwerking van het indelingssysteem is geen onderdeel van de studie.

De plantaardige ketens in Nederland, waaronder de akker- en tuinbouw, leveren een grote bijdrage aan de Nederlandse economie en werkgelegenheid, en aan de internationale handel. Zij zijn voortdurend in ontwikkeling als gevolg van veranderingen in de markt en maatschappij. In deze publicatie krijgt u snel een beeld van wat de structuur is van de plantaardige ketens, welke actuele ontwikkelingen er zijn en wat de belangrijkste oorzaken daarvan zijn. Het gaat daarbij om informatie zoals de omvang van de keten, de toegevoegde waarde die een keten levert, en welke werkgelegenheid zij biedt, hoeveel er in de internationale handel omgaat, de economische prestaties van de productiebedrijven, en de maatschappelijke uitdagingen waarmee zij geconfronteerd worden.
