This handbook is based on the project "Österreichische Kinder- und Jugendbuchautorinnen" (Austrian WomenWriters of children's literature), which was defined as part of the project "biografiA. datenbank und lexikonösterreichischer frauen" (database of austrian women, http://www.biografia.at), localised on the Institute forScience and Art in Vienna. In the years 1999 to 2002 more than 800 women writers could be describedbiographically. Among them are many women, who wrote only one single book for children, there are someillustrators who decided to write also the text for their books and there are also some wellknown writers forChildren's books, like Christine Nöstlinger, Renate Welsh, Friederike Mayröcker and many others. There ist notime-limitation, so we have a good overlook of the whole production of children's literature in Austria. Austriameans by that way to be born in this land or to live here for more than 10 years. Many of the living authors sendt their curriculum vitae and also many experts on this field helped to fill up theentries. But there are great differences between the portraits of the women, differences in the length of the articles,in the presenting details of the lifes and also differences in their way to live, in their political behaviour and so on.Many of the authors had to flee from austria during the time of nationalsocialism because of their jewish origin ortheir political background. Some of them are nearly forgotten. They were murdered or had to emigrate in a landwith another language, the chance to be able to continue the writing career was very small. But we know somewomen who had the luck to continue the career. Alex Wedding is one of them, she founded with some otherwriters like Auguste Lazar the proletarian children's literature. Hertha Pauli is one of the women whose careerbegan in her exile, she began to write books for children in the USA. The biographs can be read as a part ofaustrian culture, as a piece of our own history.It is the intention of this handbook to encourage scientists to study more about the austrian women-writers ofchildren's books and to discuss their publications.

Die Forschung hat gezeigt, dass die historischen Romane nach 1918 weniger an der Geschichte, dagegen vielmehr an der Gegenwart interessiert sind. In ihnen spiegeln sich die politischen und sozialen Umbrüche sowie die aktuellen Veränderungen in der Ersten Republik Österreich wider. In diesem Band werden historische Romane österreichischer Autorinnen präsentiert, die bislang entweder marginal behandelt oder ganz übersehen wurden, deren literarisches Schaffen aber zu ihrer Zeit auf große Resonanz stieß. Dabei werden sowohl die literarischen und biographischen Porträts der Autorinnen einer Generation, die von der Ersten zur Zweiten Republik schufen, als auch – durch neue Werkanalysen – die österreichische Literaturgeschichte vervollständigt. Der Weiblichkeitsdiskurs in den jeweiligen Geschichtstransformationen spielt dabei eine wichtige Rolle. Research has shown that the historical novels after 1918 are more concerned with the present than with the past. They reflect the political and social upheavals as well as the contemporaneous changes in the First Republic of Austria. This volume presents historical novels by Austrian women authors who have so far either received marginal treatment or been overlooked altogether, but whose literary work was met with great resonance in their time. Apart from literary works, biographical portraits of the generation of female authors who flourished during the First and Second Republic are delineated, as well as – through new analyses of works – the history of Austrian literature. The discourse of femininity in the respective historical transformations also plays an important role in this presentation.

Der umfangreiche Band zeichnet ein erschreckendes Bild von der Vielfältigkeit des Antisemitismus in Österreich in den Jahren vor dem "Anschluss" an NS-Deutschland 1938 – dies obwohl auch die Verfassung von 1934 die Gleichberechtigung aller Bundesbürger unabhängig vom Religionsbekenntnis garantierte. Die Beiträge behandeln neben der offiziellen Regierungspolitik insbesondere den Antisemitismus in Verbänden, Parteien, Religionsgesellschaften, in der Kultur- und Bildungspolitik, der Wissenschaft und Wirtschaft, aber auch jüdische Strategien gegen den Antisemitismus sowie innerjüdischen Antisemitismus. Die Autorinnen und Autoren gehören den unterschiedlichsten Fachrichtungen an, v.a. Geschichte, Politik-, Literatur- und Musikwissenschaft sowie Rechtswissenschaften.

Die Universitatsbibliothek Wien ist der Dreh- und Angelpunkt wissenschaftlicher Informationsversorgung an der Universitat Wien. Die Festschrift fur Maria 'Mia' Seissl erscheint anlasslich ihres runden Geburtstages sowie des 15-jahrigen Jubilaums, das sie als Leiterin der Universitatsbibliothek feiert. Die Mitarbeiter_innen der Bibliothek, die sich in dem von Maria Seissl maageblich gestalteten Umfeld als 'Menschen im Aufbruch' begreifen, beschreiben und analysieren in ihren Beitragen die Entwicklung der Universitatsbibliothek Wien in einer Periode historischer Umbruche: Zu Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts galt es, den Wandel von einer staatlichen Institution zu einer universitaren Dienstleistungseinrichtung zu gestalten. Gleichzeitig wurden auch die Herausforderungen des 'digital turn' angenommen.
