Het regeringsstelsel van de Verenigde Staten spreekt bijna iedereen tot de verbeelding. Amerika heeft de oudste, geschreven grondwet ter wereld en het regeringsstelsel functioneert in het algemeen naar behoren. Zowel in een jaar van verkiezingen (2012), als de tussenliggende perioden is het boeiend om te zien hoe deze grote democratie bestuurd wordt vanuit Washington DC. In dit boek wordt uitvoerig ingegaan op de werking van het Amerikaanse regeringsstelsel. Naast leerstukken en theorie komen praktijkvoorbeelden en actuele gebeurtenissen aan de orde. Het boek bestaat uit twee delen. Het eerste deel geeft de context aan van het Amerikaans staatsrecht. Ingegaan wordt op het begrippenkader, de historie van de koloniale periode tot en met de grondwet van 1787, de voor het Amerikaans staatsrecht relevante leerstukken. Ook wordt in dit deel ingegaan op het verschijnsel politieke partijen. In het tweede deel worden systematisch de bevoegdheden en de (on)macht van respectievelijk het Congres, de President en het Supreme Court besproken.
